HISTORIC RECOGNITION at the
MAITLAND ART CENTER
Explore the historic nature of the former "Research Studio" through the examination of some of the key benchmarks of the Art Center's status, both artistically and architecturally . . .
1)
What does the designation National
Register of Historic Places mean?
The Maitland Art Center was added to the National Register in 1982.
Information about the Register can be found
here. Basically, the
National Register of Historic Places is the Nation's official list of cultural
resources worthy of preservation. Authorized under the National Historic
Preservation Act of 1966, the National Register is part of a national program to
coordinate and support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and
protect our historic and archeological resources. Properties listed in the
Register include districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects that are
significant in American history, architecture, archeology, engineering, and
culture. The National Register is administered by the National Park Service,
which is part of the U.S. Department of the Interior.

Listing in the National Register contributes to preserving historic properties in a number of ways, including recognition that a property is of significance to the Nation, the State, or the community. It is an aid in consideration in the planning for Federal or federally assisted projects, eligibility for Federal tax benefits, and qualification for Federal assistance for historic preservation.
2)
What additional
recognition has MAC acquired?
MAC is also listed as a State of Florida Historic Site. Further
information at preservation of historic sites at the state level may be found
here . In
Florida, the
Office of Cultural, Historical and Information Programs is within the Department
of State, and is the state agency responsible for promoting the historical,
archaeological, museum, arts, state library, archives, records management and
folk culture resources in Florida. The Director of the Division of Historical
Resources serves as Florida's State Historic Preservation Officer (SHPO),
providing a liaison with the national historic preservation program conducted by
the National Park Service.

3)
Are there further honors
and designations advantageous to MAC?
Yes. MAC's trustees
and staff are currently hard at work to achieve the highest level of recognition
available to historic sites: NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK status.

here
to learn more about National Historic Landmarks. This process,
administrated by the National Parks Service, consists of multiple steps,
including a
precise
series of measured architectural drawings (already completed
by the HABS survey in the 1980s), followed by historical and aesthetic research
that will lead to a formal application. STAY TUNED FOR FURTHER DETAILS!
If you would like to contribute financially to this worthy cause, please contact MAC's Executive Director, Gerry Shepp, at 407.539.2181 or email Gloria Capozzi. Every contribution adds to the effort to make the Maitland Art Center a National Historic Landmark.
